WHAT DID ANYONE EXPECT AT LENNOX HEAD?

It’s been two days now since the Wozzle was sent packing from Lennox Head with a parting message from locals, “Don’t let the door hit ya.” That was one of the kinder send-offs.

The World Surf League has now moved on with its tail between its legs, looking for the next Lennox. (Newcastle has been reported as interested.) But really, what did they expect? It’s not the first time a tour contest has been chased off the point at Lennox and the whole episode felt like an exercise in bloody-mindedness. They might have had political support, but the WSL’s Lennox contest was never going to fly with locals.

Don Munro was boarding a flight to Hobart last Sunday when he got news about the proposed contest.

You know Don. Mango Surfwear. Shaun’s dad. But more specifically here, he’s been in Lennox since the early ‘80s, is a long-time former president of Lennox-Ballina Boardriders and is the President of the Lennox World Surf Reserve. He’s the guy who usually gets sent in to deal with stuff like this.

While Don was confident the surf community would rally against the contest, he wasn’t entirely sure who constituted the “surf community” at Lennox these days. “The number of new people coming in, we're getting a little bit concerned just about the attitude, you know. The area is very, very expensive to live in now. Real estate has gone through the roof so you're getting the type that have got money and sometimes a little bit too much attitude along with that. You know, so I was a little concerned that maybe we weren't going to get support from those people.”

And this is the wider question. Who gets to represent the surf community in something like this?
